Cats scratch instinctively — to mark territory, sharpen their claws, and stretch their backs. Punishment never works because the behavior isn't optional for them. The fix is environmental: provide tall, sturdy sisal-rope or cardboard scratchers at least as tall as the cat fully stretched, place them in the rooms the cat actually lives in (especially next to the spots they're already scratching), reward use with treats, and never declaw. Declawing is now banned or restricted in New York, Maryland, several U.S. cities, and most of Europe.
Scratching is not a behavior problem. It's a normal, healthy, hardwired cat behavior — for marking territory, stretching the spine, sloughing dead claw sheaths, and burning off energy. Cats need to scratch.
What you're trying to do is not stop the scratching. You're trying to redirect it from your couch, your rug, and your door frame to something the cat actively prefers.
That distinction is the whole game. Owners who try to stop scratching fail. Owners who redirect it succeed almost every time, usually within two to four weeks.
Before you fix anything, look at what your cat is choosing and why. Cats don't pick targets at random:
- Couch arms and chair backs — vertical, sturdy, fabric or leather, near where the family hangs out. Marking territory in a high-value social space.
- Door frames and corners — vertical, very sturdy, often near the entrance. Marking the boundary of their territory.
- Rugs and carpet — horizontal, soft enough to dig claws into. Many cats prefer horizontal scratching, especially after waking up.
- Cardboard boxes — horizontal, satisfying, replaceable. The clue here is the texture: corrugated cardboard.
Whatever they're scratching is telling you what kind of scratcher they want. Match it.
Pet store scratching posts are mostly too small, too wobbly, and the wrong texture. Cats reject them, owners conclude "my cat won't use a scratcher," and the couch keeps losing.
A scratching post that actually gets used has four properties:
- Tall enough for a full stretch. A full-grown cat needs at least 30 inches vertical, ideally 32–36. The cat should be able to extend front legs all the way up without bending.
- Heavy and stable. The post must not wobble when the cat puts full weight on it. A 10–15 lb base is the minimum. Wobbly posts get rejected on first use.
- Sisal rope or sisal fabric, not carpet. Sisal is what almost every cat prefers. Carpet-wrapped posts teach cats that carpet is a scratching surface — which then transfers to your floor carpet.
- Right orientation. If your cat is scratching the rug, get a horizontal scratcher (a big sisal or corrugated cardboard pad). If they're scratching the couch arm, get a vertical post.
Don't put the scratcher in the laundry room. Put it where the cat is already scratching, or as close as physically possible. Specifically:
- Right next to the couch arm they've been targeting.
- In the doorway of the room where the family spends time.
- Next to where the cat sleeps — many cats scratch immediately on waking.
You can move it 2–3 feet a week toward your preferred spot once they're using it consistently. Move it sooner and you lose them.
For multi-cat households, plan on one scratcher per cat plus one. Three cats means four scratchers, in different locations. Cats won't share scratching territory peacefully. A few small moves dramatically increase adoption rate:
- Rub catnip on the new post. Repeat for the first 3–5 days.
- Use a pheromone spray like Feliway on the post (and on the couch — it discourages marking).
- Drag a wand toy up the post during play sessions so they end the play with their claws on the post. Reward with a treat. - When you catch them using it, treat or praise immediately. Within ten seconds. Cats absolutely learn from positive reinforcement; the timing just has to be tight.
Redirection works much faster when the original target becomes mildly unpleasant. Pick one or two:
- Double-sided sticky tape (Sticky Paws is the brand made for this) on the scratched area. Cats hate sticky paws and will avoid the spot within days.
- Aluminum foil pinned over the area for 1–2 weeks while they learn the new post.
- A clear plastic furniture protector on the couch arm.
- A citrus or eucalyptus pheromone spray on the area — cats dislike both. Test on a hidden patch of fabric first.
Do not use a spray bottle, scolding, or any kind of punishment. It does not stop the scratching — it teaches the cat to scratch when you're not watching, and damages the relationship. There is solid research on this and zero professional behaviorists who recommend it.
Even a redirected cat does less damage with shorter claws. Trim only the clear tip of the nail, not the pink quick. Use a small pet nail clipper or human nail clippers for kittens. Reward with a treat after each paw.
If your cat won't tolerate trimming yet, do one nail per day for a week. Most cats will accept it once it's part of the routine.
Soft Paws / nail caps are vinyl tips you glue over the claws. They last 4–6 weeks and let cats scratch normally without damaging surfaces. Worth trying for cats who scratch furniture during the redirection period, or for households with elderly residents whose skin tears easily.
Declawing is amputation of the last bone of each toe, not nail removal. It causes lifelong pain, behavioral changes, biting, and litter box avoidance in many cats. It is banned in much of Europe, in several U.S. states, and is opposed by the AVMA, the AAFP, and every major veterinary behavior organization. There is always a less harmful solution.
Within 2–4 weeks of doing the above, you should see:
- The cat using the new post several times a day (most often after waking and during play).
- Couch / rug / door scratching dropping to zero or near zero.
- The cat sleeping near the new scratcher — they tend to claim it as territory.
If after a month the new scratcher is being ignored and the couch is still being scratched, almost always the issue is one of: post too small, post too wobbly, wrong orientation, wrong location, or wrong texture. Adjust one variable at a time and try again.
If your cat is scratching obsessively, scratching themselves raw, suddenly scratching a new surface they previously ignored, or scratching combined with other new behaviors (hiding, not eating, peeing outside the litter box) — that's medical, not behavioral. Call your vet. Stress, pain, hyperthyroidism, and skin conditions can all show up first as a scratching change.
For ordinary "my couch is shredded" scratching, this is not a vet visit. It's a scratcher purchase and a two-week redirection plan.
How PawMates Pro helps cat adopters get the right match
Every cat in the PawMates Pro partner-shelter network has a published behavior profile that includes scratching habits, prior environment (apartment vs. house, indoor-only vs. indoor-outdoor), and any previously-tried scratching solutions. The compatibility score factors that against your home's existing scratchers, other pets, and household chaos level — so you adopt a cat whose scratching style matches your willingness to manage it. Cats with established scratch-post training are clearly flagged on their card.
Frequently asked questions
My cat ignores every scratcher I buy. What am I doing wrong?
Almost always one of three things: the post is too short (under 30 inches), the post wobbles when they push on it, or the texture is carpet instead of sisal. Try a 32-inch sisal post with a heavy base. Add catnip. Place it directly next to the spot they've been scratching.
Should I get a horizontal or vertical scratcher?
Watch what they're already scratching. Couch arms and door frames mean vertical. Rugs and floors mean horizontal. Many cats use both, so having one of each is the safest bet.
Will catnip really make them use the scratcher?
For about two-thirds of cats, yes. The other third don't respond to catnip — try silver vine or valerian root instead. Both are sold as cat-attracting sprays.
Can I train my cat not to scratch at all?
No, and you shouldn't try. Scratching is a biological need. A cat who can't scratch will become anxious and start grooming themselves obsessively or peeing outside the litter box. Always redirect, never eliminate.
My new adopted cat is scratching everywhere — is this normal?
Yes, and it usually settles in 2–3 weeks as they finish marking the new territory. Have scratchers in place before the cat arrives. See my newly adopted cat is hiding: what should I do? for the rest of the cat-acclimation playbook.
Is it worth investing in expensive cat furniture?
The single most important thing is height and stability, not price. A $40 well-built sisal post will outperform a $200 wobbly designer tower every time. If you have the space and budget, a tall multi-level cat tree near a window doubles as a scratcher and an enrichment piece.
My cat scratches me when I pet them. Is that the same problem?
No — that's overstimulation, not destructive scratching. Watch for the warning signs (tail flicking, ears back, skin twitching) and end the petting session before the bite or scratch lands. That's a different conversation.
