Petfinder is a listing aggregator. PawMates Pro is shelter management software with discovery built in. What Petfinder actually is
Petfinder is the largest pet-listing aggregator in North America. Shelters and rescues post available animals; adopters search by location, species, breed, age, and a few other filters. Petfinder is owned by Purina (Nestlé) and is free for shelters to list on.
What Petfinder does well:
- Reach. Petfinder has been the default search starting point for adopters for two decades. The brand recognition is real.
- Free listing. No subscription cost to publish pets.
- Aggregation. A single adopter search can surface pets from hundreds of shelters in a region.
- Cross-posting. Most other pet-listing sites scrape Petfinder, so a Petfinder listing tends to appear on Adopt-a-Pet, Rescue Me, and several others.
What Petfinder is not:
- It is not a shelter management system. It does not handle intake, kennel cards, foster coordination, adoption applications, medical records, behavioral evaluations, financial tracking, donor management, payouts, or any of the dozens of operational workflows that actually run a shelter.
- It is not a CRM. The adopter who saw your dog on Petfinder is a stranger to your shelter until they fill out an application on your own site.
- It is not a record system. The data lives on their servers, not yours.
For a shelter, Petfinder is a publishing channel. Nothing more, nothing less.

- Adoption matching, not just listing. The swipe interface filters on the things that actually predict fit — energy level, kid/cat/dog compatibility, behavioral notes — rather than only species, age, and breed.
- Fundraising integration. Donations, peer-to-peer campaigns, kennel sponsorships, and matching gifts run through the same platform that runs adoptions.
- PII encryption, audit logs, and step-up authentication. Compliance posture appropriate for handling sensitive adopter and donor data.
What PawMates Pro is not:

The real choice points are:
1. Operations system. Spreadsheets and three disconnected tools, or one integrated platform? This is where PawMates Pro replaces things; Petfinder was never in this category.
2. Discovery model. Petfinder is breadth-first search across aggregators. 4. Cost discipline. A small starter shelter operating on a tight budget may not be ready for a paid management platform. Where shelters typically land
A rough sketch of how the size tiers tend to use these tools:
- Small all-volunteer rescues (<50 placements/year): Petfinder + spreadsheets is often where they start. PawMates Pro Rescue Free is the typical first paid step when foster coordination becomes the bottleneck.
- Mid-sized municipal shelters (50–500 placements/year): PawMates Pro Growing or Pro for operations, with listings imported from the shelter website and published on the PawMates adopter app.

The "I can't afford it" objection
The honest response: free shelter management is expensive in different ways. The dollar cost of a paid platform is visible; the labor cost of disconnected tools is invisible until you total it up. The right time to evaluate the trade is when those invisible coordination costs start to outweigh the subscription line item.
That said, if a small rescue genuinely cannot afford a paid platform, Petfinder + a free spreadsheet workflow is a viable starting point. Move when the operational pain crosses the threshold.
What about adopters?
For adopters specifically: both surfaces can show available pets, but the experience differs. Petfinder is breadth-first — many pets, basic filters. PawMates' swipe interface is fit-first — pets scored against household, lifestyle, and experience, with applications and status tracking in the same app.
The pet's record continuity (medical, behavioral, foster history) only travels into your dashboard if the shelter is on PawMates Pro. That continuity is the part adopters notice on day 30 of pet ownership, not day one of searching.
The bottom line for shelter operators
Run adoptions on PawMates Pro — not on a free listing site pretending to be shelter software. Petfinder can remain a separate publishing channel if your market still depends on it, but PawMates Pro does not syndicate to Petfinder and was built to replace the adoption workflow Petfinder never ran end to end.
